Abiding Words

Abiding Words

If ye abide in me, and my words abide in you, ye shall ask what ye will, and it shall be done unto you.” (John 15:7)

John uses an Old English word here signifying progressively awaiting full with all the fruit of the Holy Spirit: Ephesians 5:9 “For the fruit of the Spirit is in all goodness and righteousness and truth;” (Galatians 5:22)

We’ve heard it said: “wait on the Lord.” Abide means to await: a diligent and progressive awaiting. Work while you ‘abide.’ Abide eludes to remaining steadfast in the faith in Christ Jesus as Lord. If you abide, you "remain" steadfast, determined and unmovable full of faith waiting for His coming. Abiding is more than standing on the sideline watching patiently, being unfruitful, for His coming. When we truly abide in our Lord we "lodge" ourselves immersed in all and everything that we know about His word: He is the Word.  We all wait, knowing that or not! We can’t get tired, wimp out or give up. Abiding means sticking tight for the long hall. We Must "continue" steadfast; unmovable. If we "endure" long in the Word of God and plant it deep in our mind and hearts, and accept its instructions, we will see Jesus! (James 1:2) “Blessed is the man that endureth temptation: for when he is tried, he shall receive the crown of life, which the Lord hath promised to them that love him;

James 5:11 “Behold, we count them happy which endure...” But the word of the Lord endureth (abide) for ever.

James 1:12 “Thy word have I hid in mine heart, that I might not sin against thee” (Psalm 119:11).

  Proverbs 2:1 “My son, if thou wilt receive my words, and hide my commandments [within] thee;...Then shalt thou understand the fear of the LORD, and find the knowledge of God.”

  Peter’s gave us this advice: “Beloved, I now write unto you; in both which I stir up your pure minds by way of remembrance: That ye may be mindful of the words which were spoken before by the holy prophets, and of the commandment of us the apostles of the Lord and Saviour (2 Peter 3:1-2).

Since the Scriptures cannot be recalled to mind unless they’ve first been installed in the mind, and since they cannot abide in our hearts unless we first hide them in our hearts, it is surely pleasing and honoring to God that we learn “by heart” as much of His Word as we can. Know God, know peace. Amen  BLL 03/14\21
