Salvation and the Sword
SALVATION
AND THE SWORD
Ephesians
6:17
“And
take the helmet of salvation, and the sword of the Spirit, which is
the word of God:”
The
devil is a wicked one. He is the father of all lies and evil. His
game is to set our souls on fire with violent temptations. These are
his darts of fire. He never stops flinging arrows of self centered
thoughts of evil. Greater still, hard doubtful thoughts of God, and
ourselves as well. It is by our faithful application, the Word of God
and the Grace of Christ, that we are able to quench all darts of
temptation.
We
do have a source or means of
being saved from harm, ruin, or loss. The
bible calls this a helmet of salvation; it is that and more. Deliver
and defend humans from sin and its consequences is the result
of Salvation. Salvation is known by Christians to be obtained by
faith in Christ. Following the death of Jesus, his disciples spread
"the Christian gospel of salvation for all mankind" to
every part of the known world. Paul limits it in this verse seventeen
to head protection. That pretty well sums it up. All thoughts, good
and bad, enter into us through the head. Our body functions through
impulses of the brain. The brain is in the head. The heart is the
center of the body and pumps throughout the body and brain the fluid
of life; the blood. Evil is first conceived in the mind then moves to
indwell the heart where it is counted sin. If Satan can get a fiery
dart into the brain and we let it flow to the heart it becomes sin
and sin ends in death.
Clearly,
salvation must
be our helmet. Our
soul is an intermingling of the brain and heart. A
solid
foundation on
salvation delivers
a scriptural
expectation of victory. Holy
faith
will purify the soul, and keep it from being defiled by Satan. Such
“faith
comes from hearing, and hearing by the Word of God” To
the Christian armed for defense in battle, Paul
recommends only the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God. It
subdues and mortifies evil desires and blasphemous thoughts as they
rise within; and answers unbelief and error as they assault from
without. Jesus,
while being tempted of the devil answerer with “it is written.” A
single verse,
well understood, and rightly applied, destroys a temptation and
subdues the most formidable adversary. Prayer must fasten all the
other parts of our Christian armor.
There are other duties of religion, and of our stations in the world,
but we must keep up times of Holy
Ghost praying.
We must use holy thoughts in our ordinary walk
of life.
A vain heart will be vain in prayer. With
a pure heart, we
must retain
and pray for all
requests. We must pray, not for ourselves only, but for all saints.
Our
fight is not with flesh and blood. We have no power against them.
But,
our Redeemer is almighty, and in the power of his mighty Word
we shall
overcome. Listen
to God when he speaks.
Have not we, when God has called, often neglected to answer? Put
on the helment of salvation and smile into the face of the coming
storm. Know God, know peace. Amen 11-18-2019
