Whittling Time

 Whittling Time

Many days gone past, small towns around the area had whittling benches along the street curb. Men of age would gather there on certain days and display their prized knives. They would trade knives or just sit, talk, observe, and whittle. Many days were passed in this luxury of carve cedarwood into oblivion by repeatedly cutting small slices from it. Many things other than cedar can be whittled down to nothing. Considering time as one of these, let’s explore the cause and effect.
We can reduce something in size, amount, or extent by a gradual series of steps. The process may be planned and executed or simply haphazardly indulged without a thought of the consequences or benefits. In whittling, there is little purpose and no benefit. In life, every second of life whittled away is a catastrophe. As in all whittling, the finish line comes in sight to whittlers with an exclamation of satisfaction or a realization of failure. Time is not hours to keep. Nor, is it ours to possess. God owns time and He alone allots it out to individuals according to the time needed to complete His assignment to each one.
The Lord has work for us to do. Some people never “belly up to the bar”. Others come to Him in His time and take up the cross He has for them. But some have too much to do whittling out earthly belongings. God’s call was answered symbolically with “get someone else or wait until I am through.” I am sure at pillow time, they knew they had spoken wrongly.
There always comes a time when we need the Lord. A time when nothing else will “fill the bill.” Down in despair and soul tortured one day they will upon the Lord. Silence will greet their every plea and when they ask Him why He’ll reply: “Child I have so much to do; get someone else or wait until I’m through.”
Learn this lesson well! Time is not for God’s children to burn. Neither is it appropriated for refusal of its use for Him. “Lost or saved” God had a purpose, a job for us to do. We have free will to reject Him or even to decline His assignments. Let chores run along or wait until you are through with God’s work. God must come first in all things.
Ephesians 2:10 “For we are his workmanship, created in Christ Jesus unto good works, which God hath before ordained that we should walk in them.”
John 9:4 “I must work the works of him that sent me, while it is day: the night cometh, when no man can work.”
Know God, know peace. Amen. 05/20/21 BLL
