Close to Home

 Close to Home

I often read an article posted in Kingsport Times-News by an author from Scott County, Virginia. He writes about his Mother and their exploits and journeying around Flowers Gap, Blackwater, Jonesville, and Kyle's Ford. As I read, I relate. These places are “close to home.” I know the lay of the land. I know the history and its people. It is no longer the glory stand that it was in time past. Only those who recreate them mentally can remember the glory it once held. [2 Corinthians 5:7] “(For we walk by faith, not by sight:)” There has been virtualy, no attempt to preserve this landmark in Lee and Hancock Counties of Virginia. Remnants of old grist mills, schools, churches, and stores are all one will see of the old way while traveling through these areas. The old look with its purer ways is lost never to be recaptured. Time has wiped away the footprints that led to a God-fearing, striving, and loving community. (2 John 1:6 “And this is love, that we walk after his commandments. This is the commandment, That, as ye have heard from the beginning, ye should walk in it.)”
Where the landmarks are time erased and forgotten, there is no restoration. The cycle of creation and deterioration wipe away even the memory of places, things, and people. God’s word speaks of an old way and its value. Blessed are they who find it and follow His footsteps. (Isaiah 42:5) Thus saith God the LORD, he that created the heavens, and stretched them out; he that spread forth the earth, and that which cometh out of it; he that giveth breath unto the people upon it, and spirit to them that walk therein:”
Jeremiah 6:16 “Thus saith the LORD, Stand ye in the ways, and see, and ask for the old paths, where is the good way, and walk therein, and ye shall find rest for your souls.”
2 Corinthians 5:17 “Therefore if any man be in Christ, he is a new creature: old things are passed away; behold, all things are become new.”
Joshua 24:15 “And if it seem evil unto you to serve the LORD, choose you this day whom ye will serve; whether the gods which your fathers served that were on the other side of the flood, or the gods of the Amorites, in whose land ye dwell: but as for me and my house, we will serve the Lord.”
We can restore the righteousness that our predecessors lived daily. All that remains separating us from God promises is unbelief.
