The Fruit of the Holy spirit - Goodness
The Fruit of the Holy Spirit – Goodness
As Christmas come nigh to parents they often hear them telling their children ‘you better be good.” However, they are never heard explaining what goodness is. How can people be good if they don’t know the meaning of goodness. “Goodness” is a virtue given by the Holy Spirit at the moment one accept Jesus Christ as their Savior and meet all the loving commandments of God. Once the nine fruit of the Holy Ghost is instilled within their heart and mind, they become a totally different person. They take on the quality of being good and they possess moral excellence, kindness and generosity. We hear often its use as a euphemism for God as in the exclamation; “thank goodness”!
Goodness is referred to in the old testament as Toba or tuba. Some locations are: Exodus 18:9; Psalms 16:2, Psalms 23:6, Exodus 33:19; Psalms 31:19; Jeremiah 31:14; Hosea 3:5 and in Exodus 34:6, it means "abundant in goodness," plenteous in mercy, abundant in loving kindness" (Psalms 52:1) "The goodness of God endureth continually," It is part of His character and His "loving kindness" endures and grows in the Life of Christians.
In the New Testament, it can be read in: Romans 2:4; 11:22, as "the riches of his goodness.” Always it refers to being "useful, benign and kind; see Luke 6:35; Romans 2:4 Romans 15:14 "The goodness of God leadeth thee to repentance." Galatians 5:22; "full of goodness, gentleness, faith" and in Ephesians 5:9 "in all goodness and righteousness and truth;" finally in 2 Thessalonians 1:11 "every desire of goodness."
So then we see that the thought of God as good and the prominence given to "good" and "goodness" are distinctive features throughout the entire Bible. In the passage quoted above from Galatians 5:22, "goodness" is but one part of the fruit of the Holy Spirit; (Ephesians 5:9) describes it as kindness. It is the evidence of the "the fruit of the light" which Christians have after being "made whole" in Christ. Here, as elsewhere, we are reminded that the Christian life in its truth is a likeness to God, the source and perfection of all good. (2 Thessalonians 1:11) regards God Himself as expressing His goodness in and through us. Believing that, let your light so shine that those who walk in darkness might see and accept the goodness of the Holy Spirit; God.
