Sad Story

Sad Story

If God permits us to live very long, there will be sad, often horrendous, occurrences in life. These are to be expected and dealt with as they appear. On an outing, Donald R. and I, as small boys lived in a rural area of Scott County. We roamed the hills and valleys in our time just as American Indians did in theirs. On one outing we passed near an old abandoned barn. Hearing an unfamiliar noise coming from inside, we went to investigate. To our childish eyes appeared what was left of a bay horse. Locked in a stall, it was emaciated and dehydrated. Having been without food for a very long time, it had eaten the edges off all the boards around the stall. Too weak and frail to resist, it stood for haltering. We opened the door and out it staggered; swaying from side to side as if about to topple over at any minute. It wobbled to a nearby stream and drank its fill. On the trip back to the stall it nibbled grass. We were afraid of being discovered meddling in another persons business. If we had been older, fear would not have kept us from simply leaving the stall door open so it could come and go as it pleased. With tear filled eyes, we walked the journey home. A few days passed. We returned to the barn and the horse’s stall was open; the horse gone. We convinced ourselves that it had somehow opened the door and fled to the woods. Nothing was ever spoken about the event again.

I tell you this sad happening, not to cause you pain, but to make a spiritual point. Take a look around you at the stalls of God’s people. They are locked away from church, visiting preachers and other Christians. They are muzzled if they leave home and restricted to being six feet apart at all times. They are starving for the Word of God and thirsting for fellowship. Are we children or are we adults. We must find ways to feed and water the flock.

John 21:15 “...Jesus saith to Simon Peter, Simon, son of Jonas, lovest thou me more than these? He saith unto him, Yea, Lord; thou knowest that I love thee. He saith unto him, Feed my lambs. 16 He saith to him again the second time, Simon, son of Jonas, lovest thou me? He saith unto him, Yea, Lord; thou knowest that I love thee. He saith unto him, Feed my sheep. 17 He saith unto him the third time, Simon, son of Jonas, lovest thou me? Peter was grieved because he said unto him the third time, Lovest thou me? And he said unto him, Lord, thou knowest all things; thou knowest that I love thee. Jesus saith unto him, Feed my sheep.

John 10:12 “But he that is an hireling...seeth the wolf coming, and leaveth the sheep, and fleeth: and the wolf catcheth them, and scattereth the sheep.”

Know God, know peace. Amen 02/26/21 BLL
