Upon the Mountain
UPON
THE MOUNTAIN
There
are valleys deep and shallow. There are mountains tall and low. There
are boulders, thorns and thistle and there are green pastured dabbled
with daffodils. Created by God in the beginning Cultivated by human
kind. From the mountain top you can see forever. From the valley low
one sees only themselves and that which lies in arms reach. All has
been inhabited. All has been defiled. Satan authorized beauty and
luring temptations are temporal. The Creator is forever and He will
purge all things to His design. There is something about mountains
that God glories within.
- Matthew 4:8 “Again, the devil taketh him up into an exceeding high mountain, and sheweth him all the kingdoms of the world, and the glory of them;” Jesus was tempted in all ways as we are tried with temptation. Here we find the devil offering Jesus what He already owns in exchange for rule of the universe; all creation. Psalms 87:1 “(A Psalm or Song for the sons of Korah.) His foundation is in the holy mountains.” God had destroyed earthly inhabitants in past times. He certainly was and is capable of doing so once again. Luke 45: 4 “And Jesus answered him, saying, It is written, That man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word of God. 5 And the devil, taking him up into an high mountain, shewed unto him all the kingdoms of the world in a moment of time. 6 And the devil said unto him, All this power will I give thee, and the glory of them: for that is delivered unto me; and to whomsoever I will I give it. 7 If thou therefore wilt worship me, all shall be thine. 8 And Jesus answered and said unto him, Get thee behind me, Satan: for it is written, Thou shalt worship the Lord thy God, and him only shalt thou serve. Psalms 90:2 “Before the mountains were brought forth, or ever thou hadst formed the earth and the world, even from everlasting to everlasting, thou art God. He owns everything; made everything. He can and will destroy that which He has made by fire. Water was the partial destruction but no more will He use water but fire.
- Genesis 7:20 “Fifteen cubits upward did the waters prevail; and the mountains were covered. Genesis 8:4 “And the ark rested in the seventh month, on the seventeenth day of the month, upon the mountains of Ararat. Genesis 8:5 “And the waters decreased continually until the tenth month: in the tenth month, on the first day of the month, were the tops of the mountains seen.”
The
ark of rescue for God’s chosen at that time came to rest upon a
mountain and there Noah built an altar and there God made His
covenant with all inhabitants of the earth, How often do you see a
rainbow that touches not a mountain if there is a mountain to be
touch? Just as there are peaks in our life that we refer to as being
upon the mountain, so does God operates most visibly upon mountains.
When He would make a second and new covenant with human kind, it
occurred on the mountain.
- Genesis 22:2 “And he said, Take now thy son, thine only son Isaac, whom thou lovest, and get thee into the land of Moriah; and offer him there for a burnt offering upon one of the mountains which I will tell thee of.” A test of faith!
God
gave Noah the rainbow promise and covenant on Mount Ararat. Moses
saw his calling at the burning bush on the mountain and received
God’s law covenant atop Mt. Sinai. Exodus
19:20 “And
the LORD came down upon mount Sinai, on the top of the mount: and the
LORD called Moses up to the top of the mount; and Moses went up.
Abraham’s
promise and covenant of circumcision was finalized upon Mount Moriah.
(Exodus
19:18)
Finally
Jesus closed out covenant making with His sacrificial death on the
cross on Mount Calvery. There will be no more change in covenants by
the Lord. The cannon is closed and the blood covenant unto Grace is
God’s last effort to convert lost souls and keep them.
Luke
23:33 “And
when they were come to the place, which is called Calvary, there they
crucified him, and the malefactors, one on the right hand, and the
other on the left. It
was thus finished and now we wait and watch.
