The Poor
THE
POOR
Poor
may be literally defined as Lacking
sufficient money to live at a standard considered comfortable or
normal in a society. Other
terms are:
poverty-stricken
· impoverished · necessitous · beggarly · in penury, deficient
in · lacking (in) · wanting (in) · short of/on · low on ·
missing · with an insufficiency of · with too few/little
…considered
to be deserving of pity or sympathy.
- From times of old God gave instructions concerning care of the weak and poor in society.
- Exodus 23:11 “But the seventh year thou shalt let it rest and lie still; that the poor of thy people may eat: and what they leave the beasts of the field shall eat. In like manner thou shalt deal with thy vineyard, and with thy oliveyard.”
- Leviticus 23:22 “And when ye reap the harvest of your land, thou shalt not make clean riddance of the corners of thy field when thou reapest, neither shalt thou gather any gleaning of thy harvest: thou shalt leave them unto the poor, and to the stranger: I am the LORD your God.”
- God’s sympathy lies not so much with those getting along well or very well but, rather, with the poor and downcast.
- 1 Samuel 2:8 “He raiseth up the poor out of the dust, and lifteth up the beggar from the dunghill, to set them among princes, and to make them inherit the throne of glory:...”
- Matthew 5:3 “Blessed are the poor in spirit: for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.

Jesus beholding him loved him, and said unto him, One thing thou
lackest: go thy way, sell whatsoever thou hast, and give to the
poor, and thou shalt have treasure in heaven: and come, take up the
cross, and follow me.
- Mark 12:42 “And there came a certain poor widow, and she threw in two mites, which make a farthing. Mark 12:43 “And he called unto him his disciples, and saith unto them, Verily I say unto you, That this poor widow hath cast more in, than all they which have cast into the treasury:”
- Mark 14:7 “For ye have the poor with you always, and whensoever ye will ye may do them good: but me ye have not always.
- Watching after the pooris insufficient within itself to meet God’s requirements. Providers must first become children of God. Then the obligation begins. Charity with love prophets Christians greatly in Love from God and with His care and blessings.
- 1 Corinthians 13:3 “And though I bestow all my goods to feed the poor, and though I give my body to be burned, and have not charity, it profiteth me nothing..”(James 2:) 1My brethren, have not the faith of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Lord of glory, with respect of persons. 2 For if there come unto your assembly a man with a gold ring, in goodly apparel, and there come in also a poor man in vile raiment; 3 And ye have respect to him that weareth the gay clothing, and say unto him, Sit thou here in a good place; and say to the poor, Stand thou there, or sit here under my footstool: 4 Are ye not then partial in yourselves, and are become judges of evil thoughts? 5Hearken, my beloved brethren, Hath not God chosen the poor of this world rich in faith, and heirs of the kingdom which he hath promised to them that love him?
