Eye for Eye

EYE FOR EYE

Matthew Chapter Five

38 “Ye have heard that it hath been said, An eye for an eye, and a tooth for a tooth: 39 But I say unto you, That ye resist not evil: but whosoever shall smite thee on thy right cheek, turn to him the other also. 40 And if any man will sue thee at the law, and take away thy coat, let him have thy cloke also. 41 And whosoever shall compel thee to go a mile, go with him twain. 42 Give to him that asketh thee, and from him that would borrow of thee turn not thou away. 43 Ye have heard that it hath been said, Thou shalt love thy neighbour, and hate thine enemy. 44 But I say unto you, Love your enemies, bless them that curse you, do good to them that hate you, and pray for them which despitefully use you, and persecute you; 45 That ye may be the children of your Father which is in heaven: for he maketh his sun to rise on the evil and on the good, and sendeth rain on the just and on the unjust. 46 For if ye love them which love you, what reward have ye?...”

Now and again our minds race back in time to some hurtful event perpetrated by someone we see prospering and think we never “got even.” Or, frequently we will innocently cross someone’s path the wrong way to their feeling of “their space” being violated. Confrontations unsettled and glaring us in the face are troublesome; to say the least. Fingers curl into fists. Blood rushes to paint our countenance fiery red. Anger and “striking back” enters our otherwise peaceful minds. Many a scar bears witness to the indulgence into Satan’s nudging. Psychologists say that we have innate established responses to or security threats: “fight or flight.” Jesus said there was a third way and that He would stand with us in it. “Stand” and witness of Him to the attacker. Hey, I don’t say to relinquish the health and safety of family. There comes a point where “turn the other cheek” simply goes beyond our inborn ability to withstand. Romans 12:18 “If it be possible, as much as lieth in you, live peaceably with all men.” The plain instruction is, Suffer any injury that can be borne, for the sake of peace, committing your concerns to the Lord's keeping. And summing up, Christians must avoid disputing and striving. If any say, Flesh and blood cannot pass by such an affront, let them remember, that flesh and blood shall not inherit the kingdom of God; and those who act upon right principles will have most peace and comfort. Also, flesh and blood withstood, in silence, the horrors of the cross at Calvary.

1 John 4:18 “There is no fear in love; but perfect love casteth out fear: because fear hath torment. He that feareth is not made perfect in love.”

1 John 4:20 “If a man say, I love God, and hateth his brother, he is a liar: for he that loveth not his brother whom he hath seen, how can he love God whom he hath not seen?”
Proverbs 24:17 “Rejoice not when thine enemy falleth, and let not thine heart be glad when he stumbleth:”

38 “For I am persuaded, that neither death, nor life, nor angels, nor principalities, nor powers, nor things present, nor things to come,”
39 “Nor height, nor depth, nor any other creature, shall be able to separate us from the love of God, which is in Christ Jesus our Lord.” Know God, know peace. Amen. 12-15-2019 BLL
