The Anchor Holds

THE ANCHOR HOLDS
Hebrews chapter six:
11 And we desire that every one of you do shew the same diligence to the full assurance of hope unto the end:
12 That ye be not slothful, but followers of them who through faith and patience inherit the promises.
13 For when God made promise to Abraham, because he could swear by no greater, he sware by himself,
14 Saying, Surely blessing I will bless thee, and multiplying I will multiply thee.
15 And so, after he had patiently endured, he obtained the promise.
16 For men verily swear by the greater: and an oath for confirmation is to them an end of all strife.
17 Wherein God, willing more abundantly to shew unto the heirs of promise the immutability of his counsel, confirmed it by an oath:
18 That by two immutable things, in which it was impossible for God to lie, we might have a strong consolation, who have fled for refuge to lay hold upon the hope set before us:
19 Which hope we have as an anchor of the soul, both sure and stedfast, and which entereth into that within the veil;
20 Whither the forerunner is for us entered, even Jesus, made an high priest for ever after the order of Melchisedec.

Last evening I was called upon to deliver God’s word to those gathered to worship. As one having seen the storm and observed the carnage left behind when daemons come out to play, I know my anchor holds. It must because it is wedged on The Rock. The topic was “God’s Promises.” An encouraging passage of scripture was chosen from our lesson location for today.

Our hope and joy is founded upon the promises made by God, who cannot lie, so that we might have a sure looking for good things promised, having love, desire, and valuing of them to the heighest. Hope comes by faith and faith from the Word. The W outlines the promises of God. Faith is the hope in the fullfillment of these promises. Our assurance is the knowledge that God cannot lie and all things spoken by Him are certain and solid. The promise of blessedness God has made to believers, is from God's eternal purpose, settled between the eternal Father, Son, and Spirit. Immutable, as used in verse eighteen, refers to the truth that the promises of God may safely be depended upon; for here we have two things which cannot change, the counsel and the oath of God who cannot lie. Lying is contrary to His nature and His will. Thus we can rest assured that the destruction of the unbeliever, and the salvation of the believer, are alike certain.
The consolations of God are strong enough to support his people under their heaviest trials. Here is a refuge for all sinners who flee to the mercy of God, through the redemption of Christ. If they lay aside all other support systems practiced by sinners, they can anchor in Christ. We are in this world as a ship at sea, tossed up and down, and in danger of being cast away. We need an anchor to keep us sure and steady. God’s promises, which sure and steadfast are our anchor in the storms of this world. It keeps us Joyful and praising Him. The free Grace of God, and the powerful influences of his Spirit, are our assurance of this hope, and so it is a steadfast hope. In Christ we are grounded in hope. Let us therefore set our affections on things above. Know God, know peace. Amen. 11-17-2019 BLL
