One of the Twelve

 One of Twelve

Matthew 9:9 And as Jesus passed forth from thence, he saw a man, named Matthew, sitting at the receipt of custom: and he saith unto him, Follow me. And he arose, and followed him. The Unforgotten tax collector and writer of a Gospel ministered in Persia and Ethiopia.

Many wonder how the 12 apostles died, but The New Testament tells of the fate of only two of the apostles: Judas, who betrayed Jesus and then went out and hanged himself, and James the son of Zebedee, who was executed by Herod about 44 AD (Acts 12:2). each of the apostles spread out to minister and evangelize and most of the apostles died for their faith. Matthew 11:28-30. Most of what we know about the other apostles’ deaths come from ancient Christian writers and church records. It’s believed, among Christians, that only one apostle died of natural causes (John), Such records of Matthew’s death report he was martyred The early church fathers said he was burned, stoned, stabbed, or beheaded.

The Bible records reveals fourteen people as apostles; the original members of the Twelve, plus Matthias (who was chosen to replace Judas Iscariot), and Paul (the apostle to the Gentiles). They were all real people who lived and died in the first century AD.

In John Foxe’s famous Book of Martyrs (records known in the sixteenth century), the entry for Matthew states:

The scene of his labors was Parthia, and Ethiopia, in which latter country he suffered martyrdom, being slain with a halberd in the city of Nadabah, A.D. 60.”
Historical records report Mathew died when he angered a local king who ordered him nailed to a bed, covered his whole body with paper, brimstones, oil, asphalt and brushwood and set him on fire
death did not come easy to Jesus’ disciples. As Jesus suffered so did they. He told them that they would “indeed drink of the cup that he drank of.” We think we suffer for the lord in these last days. Think again and go to God’s word for clarification.

If you are looking for perspective in this pandemic. Let God’s Word speak to you. Timeless truths found in Scripture can give you that. Know God, Know peace. Amen.
