Hammer and Anvil
Hammer and Anvil
There was a time in history when each town had a blacksmith shop. The “Smithy” made every metal instrument one could imagine. It was a hot, sweaty job that required effort and endurance. All day the blacksmith’s hammers rang out a tune letting all who came near know that his heavy hammers were at work. He pounded red hot metal into everything from iron nails to wood burning stoves. Nails and horseshoes were the largest demand upon his labor. The anvil was made of hardened iron and weighed several pounds. Hammers of various sizes and weight pounded iron upon it to their own destruction. Broken handles and worn out hammer heads littered the dirt floor around the bellows blown furnace; waiting for smelting and reshaping. Many a hammer gave way to the pounding but the anvil remained intact. Its special design and strengths gave it a sort of super human quality for endurance. So it is with Christian living. Many hammers of potential destruction pound upon us daily. The Word and Love of God lay as an anvil beneath our battered souls. God tries us and designs us to withstand the storm of blows. (Hebrews 12:7” “If ye endure chastening, God dealeth with you as with sons; for what son is he whom the father chasteneth not?” If we endure to the end, the earth will be littered with worn out and broken hammers but the Promises of God will be unchanged. Lay your burdens upon this anvil and poundings will shape you into a useful implement fit for eternal life.
