Leviathan
“Canst thou draw out leviathan with an hook? . . . None is so fierce that dare stir him up: who then is able to stand before me?” (Job 41:1, 10)

I venture to say that you never heard this word even though you may have read over it many times. Located in the book of Job, leviathan referred to a large and fierce marine animal and may be the source for the dragon stories. I suspect that it was the devil himself in his dragon form. Real or imaginary, Job recognized its power. God uses a whole chapter to describe this creature! It had limbs, power, and graceful proportions. It also had teeth in the “doors of his face” that were “terrible round about.” The leviathan had scales fitted so close together “that no air can come between them.”

Psalms 74:14 ‘Thou brakest the heads of leviathan in pieces, and gavest him to be meat to the people inhabiting the wilderness.’

Psalms 104:26 ‘There go the ships: there is that leviathan, whom thou hast made to play therein.’

Isaiah 27:1 ‘In that day the LORD with his sore and great and strong sword shall punish leviathan the piercing serpent, even leviathan that crooked serpent; and he shall slay the dragon that is in the sea.’

Maybe it’s little hump backed Nessy! However, when God speaks of “neesings” that cause “sparks of fire [to] leap out,” with smoke coming out of its nose like “a seething pot or caldron,” we get the impression that this creature was something very unusual! Something not of this world at all.

God’s special leviathan is a fire-breathing dragon(s) of the sea and land. God’s dragons are described as having fire that comes from the mouth or nostrils. Ancient or not, fact or fiction, God used these “animals” to describe Satan and to impress upon His People the uncontrollable nature and power of Satan in all his actions. It is Satan who snorts out disease, pestilences and tormenting spirits upon us.

It is interesting to note that Job understood the need to learn that “the beasts . . .and the fowls of the air . . . and the fishes of the sea shall declare unto thee. Who knoweth not in all these that the hand of the LORD hath wrought this?” (Job 12:7-9). Whatever God purpose in allouinng satan to plant this monster in the weakened mind of Job, It impacted the spirit of Job to realize impossibility of modern practices in healing and to deal with satan induced torments. this caused us to cling to God who alone has power over such beasts and to know that our fate, whatever it might be, is in God’s hands. This Corona Virus is also in God’s hands. Only God can control this thing dropped upon humankind. God is all knowing and all powerful. This COVID-19 monster will endure until God says ‘stop.’ in God alone lies te cure. Know God, know peace. Amen BLL 10-09-2018
