A Giving Heart

A GIVING HEART

Then the people rejoiced, for that they offered willingly, because with perfect heart they offered willingly to the LORD: and David the king also rejoiced with great joy.” (1 Chronicles 29:9)

Israel’s people brought gifts for the construction of the holy temple in Jerusalem, it is mentioned no less than six times in this chapter that their offerings were willing offerings. In fact, they were not only willing but it also brought rejoicing in their hearts. They were building a worship house. It was a sacred place, a place belonging to all who would come to worship.

Joyful giving is not the usual response to a fundraising effort for a religious cause by modern church leaders. The parishioners follow the attitude of their chosen pastors and often the pastor tickles their ears to encourage giving. The great proliferation of solicitation of money today by media broadcast has developed a growing cynicism in Christians toward all tithing. Further, misuse of collected funds gets doubt and mistrust developing among tithing Christians.

That is not the way it should be, [Second Corinthians 9:7] “for God loveth a cheerful giver” The churches of Macedonia, though going through “a great trial of affliction” and in “deep poverty,” nevertheless “abounded unto the riches of their liberality,” and they did so in “the abundance of their joy” [2 Corinthians 8:2-4] How that in a great trial of affliction the abundance of their joy and their deep poverty abounded unto the riches of their liberality.’’ What made the difference was that they “first gave their own selves to the Lord” (2 Corinthians 8:5). First they turned from sin and gave themselves to God. Only then did they tithe to the cause of the His temple builders.

Such a willing and joyful offerings by the people for the building of the temple was the example set by David’s great personal joy and generosity. It pleased the people that their king supported their desire to have a temple of worship. Also they admired how all the other leaders of Israel contributed. [1 Chronicles 29:3-8] “Moreover, because I have set my affection to the house of my God, I have of mine own proper good, of gold and silver, which I have given to the house of my God, over and above all that I have prepared for the holy house,’’ [for a listing of what was given by all, read verses 4 thru 8]

David had let his light shine before them; led by good example. Also reminding himself and his people as he prayed a prayer of thanksgiving to God for things that came to them buy Him. Know God, know peace. Amen
