The Forgiven

Isaiah 1:18
18Come now, and let us reason together, saith the LORD: though your sins be as scarlet, they shall be as white as snow; though they be red like crimson, they shall be as wool.

Jesus taught that the only unpardonable, unredeemable sin was that of blasphemy of the Holy Spirit, all other sin could be forgiven.

Today's title is taken in opposition to a movie title that was its exact opposite, an old western that was well received at the time, about an outlaw that sought redemption, but when confronted with hardship rejected that redemption in favor of returning to the self reliance that initially placed him in the state of unforgiveness of those around him. He returned to the PRIDE of what he was capable of doing, without regard of the consequences of what was done.

Too often it is that pride that differentiates between the forgiven and the unforgiven, as that pride prevents the requirement of true repentance being given in turn for the redemption sought.

There are three types of sinner and two types of sin.

There is the forgivable, the unforgivable, and the forgiven  sinner, and there is the forgiven and unforgiven sin.

Too often men judge others in light of a differentiation of the magnitude of sin, and there are indeed different magnitudes of sin as is found in the scriptures left us for guidance, rather than differentiation of sin repented and forgiven as opposed to sin unrepented and continued in the pride of its commission despite knowledge of the truth of the necessity for that repentance.

"Don't judge me because my sin is different from yours" is a statement often made by those retaining a pride in the commission of their own, without regard of the fact that their own is equally forgivable and unforgiveable  dependent upon whether that repentance has been given.

Another often quoted is that we must love the sinner and hate the sin. This is a truer statement, but still one that needs to take into account the necessity of the sinner's repentance for sin to be forgiven, whatever that sin may be, and whatever the magnitude of that sin may be.

It all comes down to choices made, by each individual, of continuing in unforgiveness or obtaining that forgiveness and redemption through repentance and repudiation of the sin that too often is a source of pride rather than shame, rebellion rather than accession and acceptance of the very necessity for forgiveness to be given.


Matthew 12:31-32
31Wherefore I say unto you, All manner of sin and blasphemy shall be forgiven unto men: but the blasphemy against the Holy Ghost shall not be forgiven unto men. 32And whosoever speaketh a word against the Son of man, it shall be forgiven him: but whosoever speaketh against the Holy Ghost, it shall not be forgiven him, neither in this world, neither in the world to come.


The Holy Ghost is both comforter and bringer of the conviction that allows for the repentance of sin, and its forgiveness.

Without that conviction, without that acceptance of what sin is that is required for repentance, there can be no forgiveness, nor is it available when that conviction is rejected in favor of pride of rebellion that is so inherent among men.

1 Corinthians 6:9-12
Know ye not that the unrighteous shall not inherit the kingdom of God? Be not deceived: neither fornicators, nor idolaters, nor adulterers, nor effeminate, nor abusers of themselves with mankind,
10 Nor thieves, nor covetous, nor drunkards, nor revilers, nor extortioners, shall inherit the kingdom of God.
11 And such were some of you: but ye are washed, but ye are sanctified, but ye are justified in the name of the Lord Jesus, and by the Spirit of our God.
12 All things are lawful unto me, but all things are not expedient: all things are lawful for me, but I will not be brought under the power of any.

As long as that pride of rebellion exists, the sinner remains under the power of that sin, as long as the refusal for repentance exists, unforgiveness must also exist.

Genesis speaks of the men of reknown in Noah's day, prideful men, powerful men among their own kind, merciless men, men who did what they would and took pride in their ability to take what they wanted and do what they wanted, men destined to damnation because of that very pride that allowed for no forgiveness because none was sought.

The flood offered a new beginning, but even that was insufficient to overcome the pride of sin that reconstituted itself and would have doomed mankind without means of redemption that led to the supreme sacrifice of Christ Jesus that became the only redemption available, and remains the only redemption available to mankind who must hear the message preached by him from Jordan to the cross, from the cross itself as redemption was offered two malefactors crucified with him, accepted by one, rejected by the other, still choosing pride over repentance.

39 And one of the malefactors which were hanged railed on him, saying, If thou be Christ, save thyself and us.
40 But the other answering rebuked him, saying, Dost not thou fear God, seeing thou art in the same condemnation?
41 And we indeed justly; for we receive the due reward of our deeds: but this man hath done nothing amiss.
42 And he said unto Jesus, Lord, remember me when thou comest into thy kingdom.
43 And Jesus said unto him, Verily I say unto thee, Today shalt thou be with me in paradise.

Today there remains the forgiveable, the unforgiven, and the forgiven, there remains the same choice for each to make for themselves into which category they fall and remain.

There also remains the same message for these categories that makes the determination of that category.

"Repent! for the kingdom of heaven is at hand."

As for myself, I have chosen and pray that others make the same choice.


2 Timothy 1:12
12For the which cause I also suffer these things: nevertheless I am not ashamed: for I know whom I have believed, and am persuaded that he is able to keep that which I have committed unto him against that day.
