“Now after the death of Moses the servant of the Lord it came
to pass, that the Lord spake unto Joshua the son of Nun, Moses’ minister,
saying,
Moses my servant is dead; now therefore arise, go over this
Jordan, thou and all this people, unto the land which I do give to them, even
to the children of Israel.
Every place that the sole of your foot shall tread upon, that
have I given unto you, as I said unto Moses.
From the wilderness and this Lebanon even unto the great
river, the river Euphrates, all the land of the Hittites, and unto the great
sea toward the going down of the sun shall be your coast.
There shall not any man be able to stand before thee all the
days of thy life: as I was with Moses, so I will be with thee: I will not fail
thee, nor forsake thee.”
(Joshua 1:1-5)
Joshua was a wayfarer!
On the death
of Moses, Joshua was chosen to lead God’s people, and as their leader, was given
the task of being both wayfarer and warrior.
He fulfilled both of those tasks
fully and admirably as was documented throughout the book bearing his name in
our Old Testament.
In
the process of fulfilling that requirement, he faced formidable odds,
great strong armies, cities that were previously impenetrable.
His reliance and faith remained
throughout those tasks, on God, and on the Omnipotence that he knew to exist.
Through his leadership, what was
often loudly proclaimed as impossible was not only possible, but accomplished
in accordance with the will of God for his people…. And the promised land was
reached.
The people often failed to believe in
him, were self defeatists and would have given up time and again, succumbing to
the allures to be had by simply allowing that defeat.
Joshua remained steadfast, ever the
warrior and wayfarer demanded that he be, as did the greatest wayfarer and
warrior ever to be born…Christ Himself.
The same defeatism, same longing for
better things as seen without the recognition of the goal pursued, existed in
the people that Christ preached to and taught, and does to this day exist,
within a world that forgets too often that the goal is not yet reached, and
requires effort to actually attain.
Wayfarers and warriors, definitions
of those seeking the kingdom and its peace, led no longer by Joshua, or any
human whose frailties cannot deliver that goal, led now by the one who can and
will deliver… the one that reminded us of the constant need to endure despite
the obstacles that may seem insurmountable to us, but that are mere pebbles
along the path as long as we follow the WAY, the TRUTH and the LIFE, that alone
is fit leadership on the Journey demanded of each of us.
That journey will eventually come to
its conclusion, as did Joshua’s.
2 Timothy 1:12 King James Version (KJV)
12 For the which cause I also suffer these things: nevertheless I am not ashamed: for I know whom I have believed, and am persuaded that he is able to keep that which I have committed unto him against that day.
Even so come quickly, Lord Jesus!
Amen and Amen.
