There’s a Great Day
Coming
8/4/16
8/4/16
Malachi 4 King James Version (KJV)
4 For, behold,
the day cometh, that shall burn as an oven; and all the proud, yea, and all
that do wickedly, shall be stubble: and the day that cometh shall burn them up,
saith the Lord of hosts, that it shall leave them neither root nor branch.
2 But unto you that fear my name shall the Sun of righteousness
arise with healing in his wings; and ye shall go forth, and grow up as calves
of the stall.
3 And ye shall tread down the wicked; for they shall be ashes
under the soles of your feet in the day that I shall do this, saith the Lord of
hosts.
4 Remember ye the law of Moses my servant, which I commanded
unto him in Horeb for all Israel, with the statutes and judgments.
5 Behold, I will send you Elijah the prophet before the coming
of the great and dreadful day of the Lord:
6 And he shall turn the heart of the fathers to the children,
and the heart of the children to their fathers, lest I come and smite the earth
with a curse.
Continuing
the intent to reach the reachable and teach the teachable, I find that today’s
choice of title, taken again from an old and dear hymn presents both halves of
the gospel I so studiously admonish that must be preached and taught, as does
the choice of opening scripture.
There’s a great day coming
There’s a great day
coming, a great day coming;
There’s a great day coming by and by,
When the saints and the sinners shall be parted right and left,
Are you ready for that day to come?
There’s a great day coming by and by,
When the saints and the sinners shall be parted right and left,
Are you ready for that day to come?
Refrain
Are you ready? Are you ready?
Are you ready for the judgment day?
Are you ready? Are you ready?
For the judgment day?
Are you ready for the judgment day?
Are you ready? Are you ready?
For the judgment day?
There’s a bright day
coming, a bright day coming;
There’s a bright day coming by and by.
But its brightness shall only come to them that love the Lord.
Are you ready for that day to come?
There’s a bright day coming by and by.
But its brightness shall only come to them that love the Lord.
Are you ready for that day to come?
Refrain
There’s a sad day
coming, a sad day coming;
There’s a sad day coming by and by,
When the sinner shall hear his doom: “Depart, I know you not!”
Are you ready for that day to come?
There’s a sad day coming by and by,
When the sinner shall hear his doom: “Depart, I know you not!”
Are you ready for that day to come?
Refrain
The question posed by the hymn is one
that must be asked, though not welcomed, often misunderstood, often ignored,
often angering any that it is posed to, which, in itself, is too often the answer
to that question being posed.
Those preaching “prosperity gospel”
would have that question not only ignored, but in fact abolished, replacing it with only a warm fuzzy statement instead, of reminder that the first half of the gospel
prepares the way for the second half; that only both halves are the whole, and
that the second half, the promise, cannot be attained without having heard the
first half.
Joel 2 King James Version (KJV)
2 Blow ye the trumpet in Zion, and sound an alarm in my
holy mountain: let all the inhabitants of the land tremble: for the day of the Lord
cometh, for it is nigh at hand;
2 A day of darkness and of gloominess, a day of clouds and of
thick darkness, as the morning spread upon the mountains: a great people and a
strong; there hath not been ever the like, neither shall be any more after it,
even to the years of many generations.
3 A fire devoureth before them; and behind them a flame
burneth: the land is as the garden of Eden before them, and behind them a
desolate wilderness; yea, and nothing shall escape them.
4 The appearance of them is as the appearance of horses; and as
horsemen, so shall they run.
5 Like the noise of chariots on the tops of mountains shall
they leap, like the noise of a flame of fire that devoureth the stubble, as a
strong people set in battle array.
6 Before their face the people shall be much pained: all faces
shall gather blackness.
7 They shall run like mighty men; they shall climb the wall
like men of war; and they shall march every one on his ways, and they shall not
break their ranks:
8 Neither shall one thrust another; they shall walk every one
in his path: and when they fall upon the sword, they shall not be wounded.
9 They shall run to and fro in the city; they shall run upon
the wall, they shall climb up upon the houses; they shall enter in at the
windows like a thief.
10 The earth shall quake before them; the heavens shall tremble:
the sun and the moon shall be dark, and the stars shall withdraw their shining:
11 And the Lord shall utter his voice before his army: for his
camp is very great: for he is strong that executeth his word: for the day of
the Lord is great and very terrible; and who can abide it?
12 Therefore also now, saith the Lord, turn ye even to me with
all your heart, and with fasting, and with weeping, and with mourning:
13 And rend your heart, and not your garments, and turn unto the
Lord your God: for he is gracious and merciful, slow to anger, and of great
kindness, and repenteth him of the evil.
14 Who knoweth if he will return and repent, and leave a
blessing behind him; even a meat offering and a drink offering unto the Lord
your God?
15 Blow the trumpet in Zion, sanctify a fast, call a solemn
assembly:
16 Gather the people, sanctify the congregation, assemble the
elders, gather the children, and those that suck the breasts: let the
bridegroom go forth of his chamber, and the bride out of her closet.
17 Let the priests, the ministers of the Lord, weep between the
porch and the altar, and let them say, Spare thy people, O Lord, and give not
thine heritage to reproach, that the heathen should rule over them: wherefore
should they say among the people, Where is their God?
18 Then will the Lord be jealous for his land, and pity his
people.
19 Yea, the Lord will answer and say unto his people, Behold, I
will send you corn, and wine, and oil, and ye shall be satisfied therewith: and
I will no more make you a reproach among the heathen:
20 But I will remove far off from you the northern army, and
will drive him into a land barren and desolate, with his face toward the east
sea, and his hinder part toward the utmost sea, and his stink shall come up,
and his ill savour shall come up, because he hath done great things.
21 Fear not, O land; be glad and rejoice: for the Lord will do
great things.
22 Be not afraid, ye beasts of the field: for the pastures of
the wilderness do spring, for the tree beareth her fruit, the fig tree and the
vine do yield their strength.
23 Be glad then, ye children of Zion, and rejoice in the Lord
your God: for he hath given you the former rain moderately, and he will cause
to come down for you the rain, the former rain, and the latter rain in the
first month.
24 And the floors shall be full of wheat, and the vats shall
overflow with wine and oil.
25 And I will restore to you the years that the locust hath eaten,
the cankerworm, and the caterpiller, and the palmerworm, my great army which I
sent among you.
26 And ye shall eat in plenty, and be satisfied, and praise the
name of the Lord your God, that hath dealt wondrously with you: and my people
shall never be ashamed.
27 And ye shall know that I am in the midst of Israel, and that
I am the Lord your God, and none else: and my people shall never be ashamed.
28 And it shall come to pass afterward, that I will pour out my
spirit upon all flesh; and your sons and your daughters shall prophesy, your
old men shall dream dreams, your young men shall see visions:
29 And also upon the servants and upon the handmaids in those
days will I pour out my spirit.
30 And I will shew wonders in the heavens and in the earth,
blood, and fire, and pillars of smoke.
31 The sun shall be turned into darkness, and the moon into
blood, before the great and terrible day of the Lord come.
32 And it shall come to pass, that whosoever shall call on the
name of the Lord shall be delivered: for in mount Zion and in Jerusalem shall
be deliverance, as the Lord hath said, and in the remnant whom the Lord shall
call.
Both Malachi and Joel gave voice to
warning and promise, in their words concerning a Great day that is to come.
The warning was, and is, established in
the hope that it be heard, heeded and lead to the promise.
Isaiah 13:1-9 King James Version (KJV)
13 The burden of Babylon, which Isaiah the son of Amoz
did see.
2 Lift ye up a banner upon the high mountain, exalt the voice
unto them, shake the hand, that they may go into the gates of the nobles.
3 I have commanded my sanctified ones, I have also called my
mighty ones for mine anger, even them that rejoice in my highness.
4 The noise of a multitude in the mountains, like as of a great
people; a tumultuous noise of the kingdoms of nations gathered together: the Lord
of hosts mustereth the host of the battle.
5 They come from a far country, from the end of heaven, even
the Lord, and the weapons of his indignation, to destroy the whole land.
6 Howl ye; for the day of the Lord is at hand; it shall come as
a destruction from the Almighty.
7 Therefore shall all hands be faint, and every man's heart
shall melt:
8 And they shall be afraid: pangs and sorrows shall take hold
of them; they shall be in pain as a woman that travaileth: they shall be amazed
one at another; their faces shall be as flames.
9 Behold, the day of the Lord cometh, cruel both with wrath and
fierce anger, to lay the land desolate: and he shall destroy the sinners
thereof out of it.
Isaiah also sounded the warning in
regard to the day of the Lord, the verses following the chosen scripture ever
more graphic, ever more inclusive of what may be expected for those not heeding
that warning.
He also spoke of the rewards of repentance,
the promise of what is attainable for those heeding the warning and responding,
calling for all to repeat the warning, make known that there are two choices available,
that only one is to be desired and followed, that the warm fuzzy sought may
indeed be found.
Isaiah 58 King James Version (KJV)
58 Cry aloud, spare not, lift up thy voice like a
trumpet, and shew my people their transgression, and the house of Jacob their
sins.
2 Yet they seek me daily, and delight to know my ways, as a
nation that did righteousness, and forsook not the ordinance of their God: they
ask of me the ordinances of justice; they take delight in approaching to God.
3 Wherefore have we fasted, say they, and thou seest not?
wherefore have we afflicted our soul, and thou takest no knowledge? Behold, in
the day of your fast ye find pleasure, and exact all your labours.
4 Behold, ye fast for strife and debate, and to smite with the
fist of wickedness: ye shall not fast as ye do this day, to make your voice to
be heard on high.
5 Is it such a fast that I have chosen? a day for a man to
afflict his soul? is it to bow down his head as a bulrush, and to spread
sackcloth and ashes under him? wilt thou call this a fast, and an acceptable
day to the Lord?
6 Is not this the fast that I have chosen? to loose the bands
of wickedness, to undo the heavy burdens, and to let the oppressed go free, and
that ye break every yoke?
7 Is it not to deal thy bread to the hungry, and that thou
bring the poor that are cast out to thy house? when thou seest the naked, that
thou cover him; and that thou hide not thyself from thine own flesh?
8 Then shall thy light break forth as the morning, and thine
health shall spring forth speedily: and thy righteousness shall go before thee;
the glory of the Lord shall be thy reward.
9 Then shalt thou call, and the Lord shall answer; thou shalt
cry, and he shall say, Here I am. If thou take away from the midst of thee the
yoke, the putting forth of the finger, and speaking vanity;
10 And if thou draw out thy soul to the hungry, and satisfy the
afflicted soul; then shall thy light rise in obscurity, and thy darkness be as
the noon day:
11 And the Lord shall guide thee continually, and satisfy thy
soul in drought, and make fat thy bones: and thou shalt be like a watered
garden, and like a spring of water, whose waters fail not.
12 And they that shall be of thee shall build the old waste
places: thou shalt raise up the foundations of many generations; and thou shalt
be called, The repairer of the breach, The restorer of paths to dwell in.
13 If thou turn away thy foot from the sabbath, from doing thy
pleasure on my holy day; and call the sabbath a delight, the holy of the Lord,
honourable; and shalt honour him, not doing thine own ways, nor finding thine
own pleasure, nor speaking thine own words:
14 Then shalt thou delight thyself in the Lord; and I will cause
thee to ride upon the high places of the earth, and feed thee with the heritage
of Jacob thy father: for the mouth of the Lord hath spoken it.
The mouth of the Lord has indeed
spoken it.
Jesus preached both halves of the
gospel, not just the warm fuzzy of the promise. HE too stressed, throughout His
ministry the first half as well as the second.
Matthew 4:16-17 King James Version (KJV)
16 The people which sat in darkness saw great light; and to them
which sat in the region and shadow of death light is sprung up.
17 From that time Jesus began to preach, and to say, Repent: for
the kingdom of heaven is at hand.
It was and is the foundation of all
that has been taught, all that is true all that has been preordained by God
that both halves are required for the whole to be of any effect.
The second half IS available, IS
still viable, IS of utmost importance that it be recognized and accepted. That
acceptance also requires acceptance of the first half. That first half is the
very reason the second is available, and is completed through the second half,
only through the efforts of Christ Jesus to bring both to us.
John 14 1-21 King James Version (KJV)
14 Let not your heart be troubled: ye believe in God,
believe also in me.
2 In my Father's house are many mansions: if it were not so, I
would have told you. I go to prepare a place for you.
3 And if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come again,
and receive you unto myself; that where I am, there ye may be also.
4 And whither I go ye know, and the way ye know.
5 Thomas saith unto him, Lord, we know not whither thou goest;
and how can we know the way?
6 Jesus saith unto him, I am the way, the truth, and the life:
no man cometh unto the Father, but by me.
7 If ye had known me, ye should have known my Father also: and
from henceforth ye know him, and have seen him.
8 Philip saith unto him, Lord, show us the Father, and it
sufficeth us.
9 Jesus saith unto him, Have I been so long time with you, and
yet hast thou not known me, Philip? he that hath seen me hath seen the Father;
and how sayest thou then, Show us the Father?
10 Believest thou not that I am in the Father, and the Father in
me? the words that I speak unto you I speak not of myself: but the Father that
dwelleth in me, he doeth the works.
11 Believe me that I am in the Father, and the Father in me: or
else believe me for the very works' sake.
12 Verily, verily, I say unto you, He that believeth on me, the
works that I do shall he do also; and greater works than these shall he do;
because I go unto my Father.
13 And whatsoever ye shall ask in my name, that will I do, that
the Father may be glorified in the Son.
14 If ye shall ask any thing in my name, I will do it.
15 If ye love me, keep my commandments.
16 And I will pray the Father, and he shall give you another
Comforter, that he may abide with you for ever;
17 Even the Spirit of truth; whom the world cannot receive,
because it seeth him not, neither knoweth him: but ye know him; for he dwelleth
with you, and shall be in you.
18 I will not leave you comfortless: I will come to you.
19 Yet a little while, and the world seeth me no more; but ye
see me: because I live, ye shall live also.
20 At that day ye shall know that I am in my Father, and ye in
me, and I in you.
21 He that hath my commandments, and keepeth them, he it is that
loveth me: and he that loveth me shall be loved of my Father, and I will love
him, and will manifest myself to him.
That day draws nearer with each
dawning, and the question asked by the hymn bears repetition: Are you ready for
that day to come?
That day is a great day for all who have
heard and accepted both halves of the gospel.
It is a dreadful and terrible day
only for those refusing to open their ears to the message of salvation brought
us by Christ Jesus.
2 Timothy 1:12 King James Version (KJV)
12 For the which cause I also suffer these things: nevertheless I am not ashamed: for I know whom I have believed, and am persuaded that he is able to keep that which I have committed unto him against that day.
Amen and Amen
