Matthew 11:15
15 He that hath ears to hear, let him hear.
These words spoken by Jesus were in
reference to the ministry of both John, and Himself, as the simplicity of
redemption for repentance continued to be rejected despite evidence already
given of its validity, knowing full well that that rejection would result in
the necessity of the sacrifice that must be made on the cross before those
precious words of life would be heard and accepted, and that even then too many
would continue to reject those precious words of LIFE.
Today’s title comes from yet another
familiar and often heard hymn that celebrates those words of life, and what has
been given through THE WORD that is WAY, TRUTH and LIFE, for any having ears to
hear, and actually hearing.
Wonderful words of Life
Words & Music: Philip P. Bliss, 1874
Sing them over again to
me, wonderful words of life,
Let me more of their beauty see, wonderful words of life;
Words of life and beauty teach me faith and duty.
Let me more of their beauty see, wonderful words of life;
Words of life and beauty teach me faith and duty.
Refrain
Beautiful words, wonderful words,
wonderful words of life,
Beautiful words, wonderful words, wonderful words of life.
Beautiful words, wonderful words, wonderful words of life.
Christ, the blessèd
One, gives to all wonderful words of life;
Sinner, list to the loving call, wonderful words of life;
All so freely given, wooing us to heaven.
Sinner, list to the loving call, wonderful words of life;
All so freely given, wooing us to heaven.
Refrain
Sweetly echo the Gospel
call, wonderful words of life;
Offer pardon and peace to all, wonderful words of life;
Jesus, only Savior, sanctify us forever.
Offer pardon and peace to all, wonderful words of life;
Jesus, only Savior, sanctify us forever.
Refrain
It is only
from Christ Jesus that these words are made available, and through Him may be
heard for the willing, the reachable and teachable, those refusing to be lost,
refusing to accept any lie that would substitute themselves in place of that
TRUTH.
John 10:10 King James Version (KJV)
10 The thief cometh not, but for to steal, and to kill, and to
destroy: I am come that they might have life, and that they might have it more
abundantly.
The
abundance of that life that is promised is a wealth far greater than any to be
garnered by seeking abundance of the things of this world, wealth, power, fame,
all shabby, glitter of the “bling” that travels no farther than the grave.
The abundance
spoken of by Jesus is an eternal abundance, that cannot be stolen, even by the
grave, as that too is temporary.
His words
stand, still, despite the passage of the centuries, and will stand throughout
time as long as it continues to exist, and most importantly will stand
throughout the eternity promised once the existence of time itself becomes
meaningless for those having heard the precious words delivered by my Savior.
John 3King James Version (KJV)
3 There was a
man of the Pharisees, named Nicodemus, a ruler of the Jews:
2 The same came to Jesus by night, and said unto him, Rabbi, we
know that thou art a teacher come from God: for no man can do these miracles
that thou doest, except God be with him.
3 Jesus answered and said unto him, Verily, verily, I say unto
thee, Except a man be born again, he cannot see the kingdom of God.
4 Nicodemus saith unto him, How can a man be born when he is
old? can he enter the second time into his mother's womb, and be born?
5 Jesus answered, Verily, verily, I say unto thee, Except a man
be born of water and of the Spirit, he cannot enter into the kingdom of God.
6 That which is born of the flesh is flesh; and that which is
born of the Spirit is spirit.
7 Marvel not that I said unto thee, Ye must be born again.
8 The wind bloweth where it listeth, and thou hearest the sound
thereof, but canst not tell whence it cometh, and whither it goeth: so is every
one that is born of the Spirit.
9 Nicodemus answered and said unto him, How can these things
be?
10 Jesus answered and said unto him, Art thou a master of
Israel, and knowest not these things?
11 Verily, verily, I say unto thee, We speak that we do know,
and testify that we have seen; and ye receive not our witness.
12 If I have told you earthly things, and ye believe not, how
shall ye believe, if I tell you of heavenly things?
13 And no man hath ascended up to heaven, but he that came down
from heaven, even the Son of man which is in heaven.
14 And as Moses lifted up the serpent in the wilderness, even so
must the Son of man be lifted up:
15 That whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have
eternal life.
16 For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten
Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting
life.
17 For God sent not his Son into the world to condemn the world;
but that the world through him might be saved.
18 He that believeth on him is not condemned: but he that
believeth not is condemned already, because he hath not believed in the name of
the only begotten Son of God.
19 And this is the condemnation, that light is come into the
world, and men loved darkness rather than light, because their deeds were evil.
20 For every one that doeth evil hateth the light, neither
cometh to the light, lest his deeds should be reproved.
21 But he that doeth truth cometh to the light, that his deeds
may be made manifest, that they are wrought in God.
22 After these things came Jesus and his disciples into the land
of Judaea; and there he tarried with them, and baptized.
23 And John also was baptizing in Aenon near to Salim, because
there was much water there: and they came, and were baptized.
24 For John was not yet cast into prison.
25 Then there arose a question between some of John's disciples
and the Jews about purifying.
26 And they came unto John, and said unto him, Rabbi, he that
was with thee beyond Jordan, to whom thou barest witness, behold, the same
baptizeth, and all men come to him.
27 John answered and said, A man can receive nothing, except it
be given him from heaven.
28 Ye yourselves bear me witness, that I said, I am not the
Christ, but that I am sent before him.
29 He that hath the bride is the bridegroom: but the friend of
the bridegroom, which standeth and heareth him, rejoiceth greatly because of
the bridegroom's voice: this my joy therefore is fulfilled.
30 He must increase, but I must decrease.
31 He that cometh from above is above all: he that is of the
earth is earthly, and speaketh of the earth: he that cometh from heaven is
above all.
32 And what he hath seen and heard, that he testifieth; and no
man receiveth his testimony.
33 He that hath received his testimony hath set to his seal that
God is true.
34 For he whom God hath sent speaketh the words of God: for God
giveth not the Spirit by measure unto him.
35 The Father loveth the Son, and hath given all things into his
hand.
36 He that believeth on the Son hath everlasting life: and he
that believeth not the Son shall not see life; but the wrath of God abideth on
him.
This
familiar scripture is the crux of what those wonderful words, consist, and
mean. It brings both promise and warning to those having ears and hearing it.
Both Jesus’
words to Nicodemus, and John’s to his disciples make clear the necessity of the
hearing, and of accepting the words given us, the WORD given us, That Way,
Truth, and Life given us, promising both reward, and consequence of rejection
of that WORD.
The
admonition to hear those words of life echoes throughout the scriptures, and
must be relayed by those who DO hear them to those not yet having heard them.
The
apostle John, concluded the final chapter of Revelation repeating the same
promise and the same warning, as Christ reminded him that time finite, decision
must be made to hear and accept, or face the consequence of having rejected
those words of Life.
Revelation 22 King James Version
(KJV)
22 And he
shewed me a pure river of water of life, clear as crystal, proceeding out of
the throne of God and of the Lamb.
2 In the midst of the street of it, and on either side of the
river, was there the tree of life, which bare twelve manner of fruits, and yielded
her fruit every month: and the leaves of the tree were for the healing of the
nations.
3 And there shall be no more curse: but the throne of God and
of the Lamb shall be in it; and his servants shall serve him:
4 And they shall see his face; and his name shall be in their
foreheads.
5 And there shall be no night there; and they need no candle,
neither light of the sun; for the Lord God giveth them light: and they shall
reign for ever and ever.
6 And he said unto me, These sayings are faithful and true: and
the Lord God of the holy prophets sent his angel to shew unto his servants the
things which must shortly be done.
7 Behold, I come quickly: blessed is he that keepeth the
sayings of the prophecy of this book.
8 And I John saw these things, and heard them. And when I had
heard and seen, I fell down to worship before the feet of the angel which
shewed me these things.
9 Then saith he unto me, See thou do it not: for I am thy
fellowservant, and of thy brethren the prophets, and of them which keep the
sayings of this book: worship God.
10 And he saith unto me, Seal not the sayings of the prophecy of
this book: for the time is at hand.
11 He that is unjust, let him be unjust still: and he which is
filthy, let him be filthy still: and he that is righteous, let him be righteous
still: and he that is holy, let him be holy still.
12 And, behold, I come quickly; and my reward is with me, to
give every man according as his work shall be.
13 I am Alpha and Omega, the beginning and the end, the first
and the last.
14 Blessed are they that do his commandments, that they may have
right to the tree of life, and may enter in through the gates into the city.
15 For without are dogs, and sorcerers, and whoremongers, and
murderers, and idolaters, and whosoever loveth and maketh a lie.
16 I Jesus have sent mine angel to testify unto you these things
in the churches. I am the root and the offspring of David, and the bright and
morning star.
17 And the Spirit and the bride say, Come. And let him that
heareth say, Come. And let him that is athirst come. And whosoever will, let
him take the water of life freely.
18 For I testify unto every man that heareth the words of the
prophecy of this book, If any man shall add unto these things, God shall add
unto him the plagues that are written in this book:
19 And if any man shall take away from the words of the book of
this prophecy, God shall take away his part out of the book of life, and out of
the holy city, and from the things which are written in this book.
20 He which testifieth these things saith, Surely I come
quickly. Amen. Even so, come, Lord Jesus.
21 The grace of our Lord Jesus Christ be with you all. Amen.
That grace
is to be had only through having heard, and accepted, the Wonderful Word of
Life given by my Lord, Christ Jesus.
2 Timothy 1:12 King James Version (KJV)
12 For the which cause I also suffer these things: nevertheless I am not ashamed: for I know whom I have believed, and am persuaded that he is able to keep that which I have committed unto him against that day.
Amen and
Amen
