31 But they that wait upon the Lord shall renew their strength; they shall mount up with wings as eagles; they shall run, and not be weary; and they shall walk, and not faint.
(Isaiah 40:31)
Renewal of strength, no weariness, never to be faint of body or heart; this prophecy given by the prophet Isaiah is a part of the promise given, by God, both then and now to his chosen people…those who wait upon the LORD for that renewal!
It is a last verse that opened with the admonition to give comfort to that same people, and gave warning as well to all others unwilling to accept the promise that was being given.
That promise was, and is nothing less than the coming of Christ Jesus to provide both the means of that comfort, and the means by which the terms of that warning would and will be met.
40 Comfort ye, comfort ye my people, saith your God.
2 Speak ye comfortably to Jerusalem, and cry unto her, that her warfare is accomplished, that her iniquity is pardoned: for she hath received of the Lord's hand double for all her sins.
3 The voice of him that crieth in the wilderness, Prepare ye the way of the Lord, make straight in the desert a highway for our God.
4 Every valley shall be exalted, and every mountain and hill shall be made low: and the crooked shall be made straight, and the rough places plain:
5 And the glory of the Lord shall be revealed, and all flesh shall see it together: for the mouth of the Lord hath spoken it.
6 The voice said, Cry. And he said, What shall I cry? All flesh is grass, and all the goodliness thereof is as the flower of the field:
7 The grass withereth, the flower fadeth: because the spirit of the Lord bloweth upon it: surely the people is grass.
8 The grass withereth, the flower fadeth: but the word of our God shall stand for ever.
9 O Zion, that bringest good tidings, get thee up into the high mountain; O Jerusalem, that bringest good tidings, lift up thy voice with strength; lift it up, be not afraid; say unto the cities of Judah, Behold your God!
10 Behold, the Lord God will come with strong hand, and his arm shall rule for him: behold, his reward is with him, and his work before him.
11 He shall feed his flock like a shepherd: he shall gather the lambs with his arm, and carry them in his bosom, and shall gently lead those that are with young.
12 Who hath measured the waters in the hollow of his hand, and meted out heaven with the span, and comprehended the dust of the earth in a measure, and weighed the mountains in scales, and the hills in a balance?
13 Who hath directed the Spirit of the Lord, or being his counsellor hath taught him?
14 With whom took he counsel, and who instructed him, and taught him in the path of judgment, and taught him knowledge, and shewed to him the way of understanding?
15 Behold, the nations are as a drop of a bucket, and are counted as the small dust of the balance: behold, he taketh up the isles as a very little thing.
16 And Lebanon is not sufficient to burn, nor the beasts thereof sufficient for a burnt offering.
17 All nations before him are as nothing; and they are counted to him less than nothing, and vanity.
18 To whom then will ye liken God? or what likeness will ye compare unto him?
19 The workman melteth a graven image, and the goldsmith spreadeth it over with gold, and casteth silver chains.
20 He that is so impoverished that he hath no oblation chooseth a tree that will not rot; he seeketh unto him a cunning workman to prepare a graven image, that shall not be moved.
21 Have ye not known? have ye not heard? hath it not been told you from the beginning? have ye not understood from the foundations of the earth?
22 It is he that sitteth upon the circle of the earth, and the inhabitants thereof are as grasshoppers; that stretcheth out the heavens as a curtain, and spreadeth them out as a tent to dwell in:
23 That bringeth the princes to nothing; he maketh the judges of the earth as vanity.
24 Yea, they shall not be planted; yea, they shall not be sown: yea, their stock shall not take root in the earth: and he shall also blow upon them, and they shall wither, and the whirlwind shall take them away as stubble.
25 To whom then will ye liken me, or shall I be equal? saith the Holy One.
26 Lift up your eyes on high, and behold who hath created these things, that bringeth out their host by number: he calleth them all by names by the greatness of his might, for that he is strong in power; not one faileth.
27 Why sayest thou, O Jacob, and speakest, O Israel, My way is hid from the Lord, and my judgment is passed over from my God?
28 Hast thou not known? hast thou not heard, that the everlasting God, the Lord, the Creator of the ends of the earth, fainteth not, neither is weary? there is no searching of his understanding.
29 He giveth power to the faint; and to them that have no might he increaseth strength.
30 Even the youths shall faint and be weary, and the young men shall utterly fall:
31 But they that wait upon the Lord shall renew their strength; they shall mount up with wings as eagles; they shall run, and not be weary; and they shall walk, and not faint.
The voice then that was to “cry in the wilderness” was none other than John the Baptist, forerunner of our Lord and Savior Christ Jesus.
That cry was, and is, intended to prepare the way, to call to one and all willing to hear, the need to recognize that Christ was, and is coming to deliver the promise, and to make straight the path for that coming, a highway in the desert that was then and is now the face of this world in which we live.
Even the very mountains and valleys were to be made aware of that coming....The glory of the Lord that all flesh shall see together, a promise delivered in the appearance of Jesus, and one that remains for all who recognize the Son of God for who he is, and that his return will be the completion of that promise.
How can we be so blind as not to see confirmation and consummation of the words given not only by this old prophet, by the Psalmists, by Solomon in Ecclesiastes, and most importantly by the greatest of all prophets, the Son of God himself, that just as the grass withers and dies, flowers fade, flesh wanes weak and dies, while the WORD of God still stands forever.
The time is come once more for believers to stand without fear and cry into this wilderness, to lift our voices with the same strength demanded of John that the LORD will come with strength and might far beyond any that man may ever possess, that He comes again to feed His flock, gather them together, and gently lead them in the victory that is only available to those who follow that Shepherd.
Mankind still attempts to deny the counsel given by Isaiah, the warning given by him, the promise and warning given through John, and fulfilled in the appearance of Christ.
Mankind remains “as grasshoppers on the earth, and there remains no equal to The Creator who holds all true power.

Whatever knowledge and understanding gleaned by men remains puny and trivial, and will never come close to that of the God giving us what little we are able to assimilate in the fraction of time we exist in this mortal and corrupt body, capable only of partial comprehension of what has been done and continues to be done by our Creator.
We are still of nothing, and our work is still of nought, despite the pride taken in all the progress we may think to have made since the time Isaiah wrote these words.
We are not now, nor will we ever be, gods that control the events of the past and future, of even of the present in which we live.
That was never to be, and is never to be our purpose.
The promise of comfort that was given in that first verse of the 40th chapter is still available.
The warning given throughout the prophecy is still accurate and must continue to be blared from the very rooftops while time remains to do so.
The fact of Christ’s having come, the fact of his teachings throughout his ministry, the fact of his crucifixion and sacrifice because of the unwillingness to accept the promise brought to a world in denial of him, the fact of the death of the mortal man that embodied the Son of God, and the absolute fact that that death was overcome through the resurrection of that same Son of God, His ascension and mediation for mankind, and the gift given through not only His earthly ministry, but His willing sacrifice that provided the blood needed for one final sacrifice to cleanse sin once and for all for those choosing to accept HIS blood, and through it HIS promise must be voiced in preparation of this wilderness for His return.
John told us that he would come with his fan in his hand, the wheat and chaff will be separated!
11 I indeed baptize you with water unto repentance. but he that cometh after me is mightier than I, whose shoes I am not worthy to bear: he shall baptize you with the Holy Ghost, and with fire:
12 Whose fan is in his hand, and he will throughly purge his floor, and gather his wheat into the garner; but he will burn up the chaff with unquenchable fire.
(Matthew 3:11 &12)
We too need to recognize our unworthiness to even unlatch the shoes of our Savior, to cease touting the righteousness of men and mankind and declare the righteousness of the only one who is worthy to be declared, JESUS!
Even at trial before his crucifixion, the promise was given and the warning alongside it for any willing to hear and understand it:
56 For many bare false witness against him, but their witness agreed not together.
57 And there arose certain, and bare false witness against him, saying,
58 We heard him say, I will destroy this temple that is made with hands, and within three days I will build another made without hands.
59 But neither so did their witness agree together.
60 And the high priest stood up in the midst, and asked Jesus, saying, Answerest thou nothing? what is it which these witness against thee?
61 But he held his peace, and answered nothing. Again the high priest asked him, and said unto him, Art thou the Christ, the Son of the Blessed?
62 And Jesus said, I am: and ye shall see the Son of man sitting on the right hand of power, and coming in the clouds of heaven.

3 In those days came John the Baptist, preaching in the wilderness of Judaea,2 And saying, Repent ye: for the kingdom of heaven is at hand.
3 For this is he that was spoken of by the prophet Esaias, saying, The voice of one crying in the wilderness, Prepare ye the way of the Lord, make his paths straight.

1 When the Son of man shall come in his glory, and all the holy angels with him, then shall he sit upon the throne of his glory:32 And before him shall be gathered all nations: and he shall separate them one from another, as a shepherd divideth his sheep from the goats:

34 Then shall the King say unto them on his right hand, Come, ye blessed of my Father, inherit the kingdom prepared for you from the foundation of the world:
35 For I was an hungred, and ye gave me meat: I was thirsty, and ye gave me drink: I was a stranger, and ye took me in:
36 Naked, and ye clothed me: I was sick, and ye visited me: I was in prison, and ye came unto me.
37 Then shall the righteous answer him, saying, Lord, when saw we thee an hungred, and fed thee? or thirsty, and gave thee drink?

39 Or when saw we thee sick, or in prison, and came unto thee?
40 And the King shall answer and say unto them, Verily I say unto you, Inasmuch as ye have done it unto one of the least of these my brethren, ye have done it unto me.
41 Then shall he say also unto them on the left hand, Depart from me, ye cursed, into everlasting fire, prepared for the devil and his angels:
42 For I was an hungred, and ye gave me no meat: I was thirsty, and ye gave me no drink:
43 I was a stranger, and ye took me not in: naked, and ye clothed me not: sick, and in prison, and ye visited me not.
44 Then shall they also answer him, saying, Lord, when saw we thee an hungred, or athirst, or a stranger, or naked, or sick, or in prison, and did not minister unto thee?
45 Then shall he answer them, saying, Verily I say unto you, Inasmuch as ye did it not to one of the least of these, ye did it not to me.
46 And these shall go away into everlasting punishment: but the righteous into life eternal.

The cry must be given in this wilderness that whosoever will may come, that the time and day is now, and that soon is sooner than any may think.
The time for platitude and political correctness is past. The time for the echo by each and every child of the King of both the warning and the promise of eternal life is now.
I pray that all heed the warning and accept the promise before it is too late to do so.
I remain His humble servant, claiming no righteousness of my own, no special, unique quality that would grant me admittance to the promised kingdom other than that given me by Him through the promise accepted so long ago, and continued faith in His ability to deliver that promise.
This simple sinner saved by his grace through faith in him alone, still wayfarer and soldier in His service would remind you once more, not of my own words, but, His apostle John’s, and more importantly His own:
