Faith cometh by Hearing

“So then faith cometh by hearing, and hearing by the word of God.”

Romans 10:17

For today’s message we go to the 10th Chapter of the book of Romans. Here Paul is addressing the Church at Rome giving guidance to them despite his physical absence.

In the early church, and indeed in today’s church, many fell prey to the teachings of those who added to or subtracted from the message delivered by our Savior.

In this, and in most of his other writings, Paul attempts to put them back on the right path and draw them away from those who would give them platitudes, submit them to other means to reach God, or deny that Christ was the only means now available to the Kingdom established by Jesus’ Father, and available only to the believer.

Once again, let us back track to the first verse of the Chapter:

“Brethren, My heart’s desire and prayer to God for Israel is that they might be saved.

For I bear them record that they have a zeal of God, but not according to knowledge.

For they being ignorant of God’s righteousness, and going about to establish their own righteousness, have not submitted themselves unto the righteousness of God.

For Christ is the end of the law for righteousness to every one that believeth.

For Moses describeth the righteousness which is of the law, That The Man Which Doeth Those Things Shall Live By Them .

Romans 10: 1-5

Paul states that it is both his desire and prayer that Israel might be saved. It is my ardent desire and prayer that not only Israel, but that all nations hearken to the message he gives us in these passages.

He goes on to state that Israel has a zeal for God, but is attempting to find God in the wrong way.

Not only Israel is guilty of this attempt to find righteousness through their own teachings instead of those of our Lord.

The same thing occurs daily in every society across the face of this world on which we live. Too many seek to establish their own righteousness instead of admitting the simple fact that all have sinned and come short of God’s glory, and that the only way back to that glory is through both the blood sacrifice that was already made, and the teachings of our Savior.

Paul states that Jesus is the end of the law for righteousness to everyone that believes..

This means that a true believer must first accept that he cannot attain righteousness only of himself, or his works, but by the intercession of Jesus alone.

Paul ends this particular passage with the statement that Moses described righteousness of law.

With the sacrifice and resurrection of Jesus, that law of the old covenant became mute.

The new covenant through belief in the Son of God became the only acceptable means to reach the Father. Though the law applies to our daily lives, if, as Christians that law has been written on our hearts as God himself specified, since we as men will in this sinful body constantly fall short of this law, we may find atonement only through Christ Jesus.

The 6th verse continues:

“But the righteousness which is of faith speaketh on this wise, ASK NOT IN THINE HEART, WHO SHALL ASCEND INTO HEAVEN? (that is to bring Christ down from above;)

OR WHO SHALL DESCEND INTO THE DEEP? (That is to bring up Christ again from the dead.)

But what saith it? THE WORD IS NIGH THEE, EVEN IN THY MOUTH, AND IN THY HEART: that is , the word of faith, which we preach;

That if thou shalt confess with thy mouth the Lord Jesus, and shalt believe in thine heart that God hath raised him form the dead, thou shalt be saved.

For with the heart man believeth unto righteousness; and with the mouth confession is made unto salvation.

For the scripture saith, WHOSOEVER BELIEVETH ON HIM SHALL NOT BE ASHAMED.

For there is no difference between the Jew and the Greek: for the same Lord over all is rich unto all that call upon him.

For WHOSOEVER SHALL CALL UPON THE NAME OF THE LORD SHALL BE SAVED.

Romans 10 6-13

Righteousness of faith!

That is the requirement that we find Paul preaching across the centuries today!

Paul says that we must believe with our heart that not only was Christ crucified, but that he was raised by God in the first resurrection to life to be our intercessor at His Throne!

He goes on to say that if we believe we will confess that belief to others, that we will not be ashamed of our faith.

He quotes Scriptures found in Joel, Jeremiah, Deuteronomy, Ezekiel and others to emphasize his point that belief requires confession of that belief!

He goes on to state that this does not apply only to the Jewish people, but to ALL! This passage ends with the quote taken from Joel. I may add only one other more powerful reference made by Jesus himself. The oft quoted John 3:16 which once more affirms that WHOSOEVER believes in Jesus will be saved!

Paul continues with the 14th verse:

“How then shall they call on him in whom they have not believed? And how shall they believe in him of whom they have not heard? And how shall they hear without a preacher?

And how shall they preach, except they be sent? As it is written HOW BEAUTIFUL ARE THE FEET OF THEM THAT PREACH THE GOSPEL OF PEACE, AND BRING GLAD TIDINGS OF GOOD THINGS!

Romans 10:14&15

You cannot call on the Lord without believing in him first!

You cannot believe in him without having heard the gospel of his teachings!

You cannot hear of those teachings without a preacher.

A preacher cannot preach the teachings of Christ Jesus unless he is truly called of God and sent by Him to deliver these teachings!

The beauty of the gospel is the peace through Christ and the glad tidings and good things are found in the fact that He Alone , by choice, sacrificed himself for our sin to give us the chance to repent and reach the Kingdom prepared for God’s children throughout the world!

Verse 16 continues:

“But they have not all obeyed the gospel. For Esaias saith, LORD WHO HATH BELIEVED OUR REPORT?

So then faith cometh by hearing, and hearing by the word of God.

But I say, Have they not heard? Yes verily, THEIR SOUND WENT INTO ALL THE EARTH, AND THEIR WORDS UNTO THE ENDS OF THE WORLD.

But I say, did not Israel know? First Moses saith, I WILL PROVOKE YOU TO JEALOUSYBY THEM THAT ARE NO PEOPLE, AND BY A FOOLISH NATION I WILL ANGER YOU.

But Esaias is very bold, and saith, I WAS FOUND OF THEM THAT SOUGHT ME NOT; I WAS MADE  MANIFEST UNTO THEM THAT ASKED NOT AFTER ME.

But to Israel he saith ,  ALL DAY LONG I HAVE STRETCHED FORTH MY HANDS UNTO A DISOBEDIENT AND GAINSAYING PEOPLE.

Not all have obeyed the gospel

Not all who preach bring to you the true and undying word of God.

Not all teach the tenants and sayings of our Lord Jesus, as he asked us in his great commission found at the end of Matthew!

Who hath believed our report indeed! That report is worthless unless it contains the very things intended by Christ Jesus! The sound of those teachings has indeed gone out to all the earth.

The word of God is still reaching unto the ends of the world through the many means available to His preachers today

God has provoked not only Israel to jealousy, but indeed the entire western civilization that has for the most part begun to turn away from Him.

God is still available and still willing to work though all who will serve him and who will believe in the new covenant provided through Christ Jesus,.He is still stretching forth His hand to this people still begging us to listen and obey.

Salvation through the blood of Jesus is still available to all who will simply accept it!

Once more I close this message with the love commanded by our Savior for all who will accept it and Him.
A simple sinner saved by the Grace of God through the sacrifice of his only begotten Son, and a soldier in His service, salutes all who read this in His name, Jesus.

Amen and Amen
