What Child Is This? CMc
What Child Is This?
Luke 2:1-20
King James Version (KJV)
2 And it came to pass in those days, that there went out a decree
from Caesar Augustus that all the world should be taxed.
2 (And this
taxing was first made when Cyrenius was governor of Syria.)
3 And all
went to be taxed, every one into his own city.
4 And Joseph
also went up from Galilee, out of the city of Nazareth, into Judaea, unto the
city of David, which is called Bethlehem; (because he was of the house and
lineage of David:)
5 To be taxed
with Mary his espoused wife, being great with child.
6 And so it
was, that, while they were there, the days were accomplished that she should be
delivered.
7 And she
brought forth her firstborn son, and wrapped him in swaddling clothes, and laid
him in a manger; because there was no room for them in the inn.
8 And there
were in the same country shepherds abiding in the field, keeping watch over
their flock by night.
9 And, lo,
the angel of the Lord came upon them, and the glory of the Lord shone round
about them: and they were sore afraid.
10 And the
angel said unto them, Fear not: for, behold, I bring you good tidings of great
joy, which shall be to all people.
11 For unto
you is born this day in the city of David a Saviour, which is Christ the Lord.
12 And this
shall be a sign unto you; Ye shall find the babe wrapped in swaddling clothes,
lying in a manger.
13 And
suddenly there was with the angel a multitude of the heavenly host praising
God, and saying,
14 Glory to
God in the highest, and on earth peace, good will toward men.
15 And it came
to pass, as the angels were gone away from them into heaven, the shepherds said
one to another, Let us now go even unto Bethlehem, and see this thing which is
come to pass, which the Lord hath made known unto us.
16 And they
came with haste, and found Mary, and Joseph, and the babe lying in a manger.
17 And when
they had seen it, they made known abroad the saying which was told them
concerning this child.
18 And all
they that heard it wondered at those things which were told them by the
shepherds.
19 But Mary
kept all these things, and pondered them in her heart.
20 And the
shepherds returned, glorifying and praising God for all the things that they
had heard and seen, as it was told unto them.
What Child is this, who laid to rest,
On Mary's lap is sleeping?
Whom angels greet with anthems sweet
While shepherds watch are keeping?
This, this is Christ the King
Whom shepherds guard and angels sing.
Haste, haste to bring Him laud,
The Babe, the Son of Mary.
Why lies He in such mean estate
Where ox and ass are feeding?
Good Christian, fear: for sinners here,
The silent Word is pleading.
This, this is Christ the King
Whom shepherds guard and angels sing.
Haste, haste to bring Him laud,
The Babe, the Son of Mary.
Nails, spear, shall pierce Him through,
The Cross be borne, for me, for you:
Hail, hail, the Word made flesh,
The Babe, the Son of Mary!
This, this is Christ the King
Whom shepherds guard and angels sing.
Haste, haste to bring Him laud,
The Babe, the Son of Mary.
So bring Him incense, gold and myrrh
Come, peasant, king, to own Him
The King of kings salvation brings
Let loving hearts enthrone Him
This, this is Christ the King
Whom shepherds guard and angels sing.
Haste, haste to bring Him laud,
The Babe, the Son of Mary
The opening scripture,
and the hymn so well-known and loved throughout the world stand as witness and
reminder of just whom this gift from God was, is, and can be, to all of
humanity that is willing to acknowledge that gift, the Son of God, the Word
made flesh, scorned, rejected, crucified all to no avail because of the
resurrection and continuance of the greatest gift ever bestowed upon mankind.
The poverty of
His birth, the circumstances of His life, the simplicity of His message and the
proof shown throughout His ministry through the many miracles performed were
summed up in the single commandment He left us.
That birth could
never have occurred without the love demanded by that commandment, nor would
the birth of yet another man child have mattered more than any before or after
it.
The significance
of that birth, lauded by the angels themselves, lay in the willingness of the
sacrifice to be made, in the humility of the life led, simplicity of what was
offered to a creature that continued then, and continues now to attempt to complicate
the single most uncomplicated relationship ever established… that of man to
God, and God to man.
John 1
King James Version (KJV)
1 In the beginning
was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God.
2 The same was in the beginning with God.
3 All things were made by him; and without him was not any thing made that
was made.
4 In him was life; and the life was the light of men.
5 And the light shineth in darkness; and the darkness comprehended it not.
6 There was a man sent from God, whose name was John.
7 The same came for a witness, to bear witness of the Light, that all men through
him might believe.
8 He was not that Light, but was sent to bear witness of that Light.
9 That was the true Light, which lighteth every man that cometh into the
world.
10 He was in the world, and the world was made by him, and the world knew
him not.
11 He came unto his own, and his own received him not.
12 But as many as received him, to them gave he power to become the sons of
God, even to them that believe on his name:
13 Which were born, not of blood, nor of the will of the flesh, nor of the
will of man, but of God.
14 And the Word was made flesh, and dwelt among us, (and we beheld his
glory, the glory as of the only begotten of the Father,) full of grace and
truth.
15 John bare witness of him, and cried, saying, This was he of whom I spake,
He that cometh after me is preferred before me: for he was before me.
16 And of his fulness have all we received, and grace for grace.
17 For the law was given by Moses, but grace and truth came by Jesus Christ.
Grace and truth, the living Word;
THAT is who this child was, IS, and
will be.
Mediator and
intercessor for those who choose to accept that mediation and intercession on
their behalf by simply hearing and heeding the message brought that was too
important to be brought by the angels themselves, too important to be left to a
mere prophet:
THAT is who this
child was, IS, and continues to be.
Teacher,
counselor, provider of what was needed more than any other need ever faced by
mankind;
THAT is who this
child was, IS, and remains for any and all willing to accept the gift given
that could only be given by and through HIM.
John 3:5-21King James Version (KJV)
5 Jesus answered, Verily, verily, I say unto thee, Except a man be born of
water and of the Spirit, he cannot enter into the kingdom of God.
6 That which is born of the flesh is flesh; and that which is born of the
Spirit is spirit.
7 Marvel not that I said unto thee, Ye must be born again.
8 The wind bloweth where it listeth, and thou hearest the sound thereof,
but canst not tell whence it cometh, and whither it goeth: so is every one that
is born of the Spirit.
9 Nicodemus answered and said unto him, How can these things be?
10 Jesus answered and said unto him, Art thou a master of Israel, and
knowest not these things?
11 Verily, verily, I say unto thee, We speak that we do know, and testify
that we have seen; and ye receive not our witness.
12 If I have told you earthly things, and ye believe not, how shall ye
believe, if I tell you of heavenly things?
13 And no man hath ascended up to heaven, but he that came down from heaven,
even the Son of man which is in heaven.
14 And as Moses lifted up the serpent in the wilderness, even so must the
Son of man be lifted up:
15 That whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have eternal life.
16 For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that
whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life.
17 For God sent not his Son into the world to condemn the world; but that
the world through him might be saved.
18 He that believeth on him is not condemned: but he that believeth not is
condemned already, because he hath not believed in the name of the only
begotten Son of God.
19 And this is the condemnation, that light is come into the world, and men
loved darkness rather than light, because their deeds were evil.
20 For every one that doeth evil hateth the light, neither cometh to the
light, lest his deeds should be reproved.
21 But he that doeth truth cometh to the light, that his deeds may be made
manifest, that they are wrought in God.
The only
begotten Son of God!
THAT is who this
child was, IS, and will remain throughout the life promised only though His
resurrection.
John 14:6
King James Version (KJV)
6 Jesus saith unto him, I am the way, the truth, and the life: no man
cometh unto the Father, but by me.
THAT is who that child was, IS, and
to which no other may lay claim.
Amen and Amen
